Property code: OC-1709

This former mill is steeped in history. It was one of ten windmills originally built to power drainage pumps for the surrounding marshland of Haddiscoe Island. Grade ll listed, the mill has been renovated to provide comfortable accommodation over four floors. There are stunning views of the River Yare and towards Burgh Castle. There is an abundance of wildlife on the marshes which are used for cattle grazing between April and October.

The living space of this cylindrical beauty is all found on the ground floor with the kitchen and dining area offering a compact space where meals can be prepared and then eaten around the dining table. The sitting room has comfortable seating, a TV, with a DVD player and a flame-effect gas fire. Finishing off the ground floor is the bathroom so if you’re sleeping at the top, don’t forget to use the loo before you head up! Head up the curved stairs to the first floor which houses a double bedroom, before climbing the steep stairs to the second-floor double room which can be converted into a twin upon request. Ladder-style stairs take you to the third floor, where the final double bedroom can be found in the cap of the windmill. Outside is an enclosed garden with a lawn, a terrace, a charcoal BBQ and a table and chairs.

This is a unique, tranquil and remote location, great for walking, bird watching and just watching the boats go by. Haddiscoe Island is a unique landscape; an inland island consisting of approximately 2,000 acres of marshland adjacent to the River Yare and River Waveney. The area is rich in wildlife; deer are frequently seen, together with marsh harriers, herons, geese and owls to name but a few. Cattle graze freely during most of the year. It is an area of huge skies and stunning sunsets, out here you feel a million miles away from the world, however, the coast is within 10 miles and if a little retail therapy is required, the beautiful cathedral city of Norwich is just 24 miles away where you will find theatres, museums, shops, restaurants and coffee shops.

  • 3 bedrooms – 2 doubles, 1 zip-and-link double which can be made up as a twin with 2’6” beds on request
  • 1 bathroom with bath, handheld shower and WC
  • Electric oven, microwave, fridge with ice compartment, freezer

  • Please be aware the stairs to the top two floors of the mill Please be aware the stairs to the top two floors of the mill may not be suitable for anyone with restricted mobility
  • It is not advised to launch a boat/kayak from the river as this is tidal and unsafe
  • The approach to the property is via a four-mile track over marshland, there are sets of gates that need to be opened and closed

This is an absolute dream of a location if you like peace, wildlife and utter privacy. Gorgeous views and a snug accommodation, so cute to stay in. We stayed in the summer when the Honeysuckle was in full bloom and scented the arbour, roses round the gate and a little garden that was well maintained and utterly private. I would imagine it would Read morebe just as adorable in the swirling mists of November too. If there is a downside, I would say it was the colour and metalic smell of the water that came out of the taps which stained everything and although rustic, a really good dusting of the rocking chair would have been nice and maybe a renovation of the very tired and worn couch and a wash of the cushions would make it seem a cleaner place. Unique accommodation in a lovely isolated spot, ideally suited for a quiet getaway. Be prepared with ample provisions as the route along the track to the mill does take at least twenty minutes, probably a lot longer in the dark! Accommodation is now a bit tired and dated and in need of some tlc. The only really downside was the vast numbers of flRead moreies (dead and alive) in the top storey which would have made sleeping in the top storey impossible. Fortunately our number of guests allowed us to not use that room. Hide

The location is amazing, total privacy, quirky old windmill which is an experience in itself, able to sit & watch the boats go by from the garden, fantastic to see so much wildlife every day. Early morning mist at sunrise was picture perfect.
